Gurman: Apple Planning to Use iPhones for Streaming Broadcasts During Virtual WWDC 2020

Apple is planning to use iPhones for streaming broadcasts during the upcoming virtual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2020).

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will use the iPhone to stream during WWDC 2020. However, the use of iPhones may be limited to developer sessions, while Apple’s keynote presentation and other prominent broadcasts will still use professional studio rigs and tracking equipment.

Several television shows have used the iPhone to produce shows during the COVID-19 pandemic. A special “Parks and Recreation” episode used iPhones, and well-known talk show host Conan O’Brien’s show uses an iPhone from his home to interview guests via Skype.

“American Idol” also uses iPhones to film competitors’ performances from their homes. A recent TechCrunch article notes American Idol uses a three iPhone 11 Pro setup involving the three iPhones, a tripod, and a light ring. Production teams help remotely with camera setups while editing the video from home.

Apple released a statement for the TechCrunch article, saying the iPhone offers the ability for professionals to deliver “broadcast quality” video.

We know that people are relying on their favorite shows while staying at home, and we are happy to be a part of that process with the team at American Idol. iPhone offers a unique solution to deliver broadcast quality video, in the palm of your hand, while keeping production staff and on-air talent safe and in their homes.

Apple’s virtual WWDC 2020 event kicks off next month and will be available to all developers via the Apple Developer app and website.
