Skype for Mac Updated With New Custom Virtual Backgrounds Here’s How to Use Them

Skype has received an update that will allow users to implement Zoom-like custom backgrounds for their video calls.

Thurrot reports Skype has started rolling out a new version of its app for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Web that adds support for custom backgrounds. Previously, Skype was only capable of blurring your background during a video call.

Skype explains the Zoom-like feature:

This could be anywhere: Want to look like you’re calling from the beach, or from space? Now you can, with custom backgrounds for your video calls.

Microsoft says its best to use landscape images, and the image you want to use must be saved locally on your computer.

How do I blur or customize my background during a video call in Skype?

  1. During a call, hover over the video button or click the More menu.
  2. Click Choose background effect.
  3. You can Blur the room you’re in currently, choose an image you previously added, or add a new image to customize your background effect.

How do I blur or customize my background for all video calls in Skype?

  1. Click your profile picture.
  2. Click Settings then click Audio & Video.
  3. Under Choose background effect, you can Blur the room you’re in currently, choose an image you previously added, or add a new image to customize your background effect.

If you don’t see the above options, make sure your Skype app has been updated to version 8.59.0.77 by clicking “Check for Updates” in the “Skype” menu.

The update also makes it easier to share files directly from your Mac to your Skype contacts.

More details about this week’s update to Skype is available on the Microsoft website.
