iOS 14 Could Include ‘Clips’ Feature to Allow Using Apps Without a Full Download

An early build of iOS 14 indicates Apple is working on a new feature that would allow iOS users to access parts of third-party apps across the system without needing to have them installed.

The early build of iOS 14, obtained by 9to5Mac, offers evidence of a new API referred to as “Clips,” which would allow users to scan a QR code linked to an app, and then interact with content in the app through a floating card on the screen. The card would offer options to allow downloading of the full app from the App Store or the user could open the content in the app if it is already installed on the device.

The feature is similar to an Android feature called “Slices,” which shows interactive parts of an app in places like the Google Search results and Google Assistant.

The 9to5Mac report says Apple is testing the new feature with OpenTable, Yelp, DoorDash, YouTube, and Sony’s PS4 Second Screen app.
