Confirmed: New iPad Pro’s A12Z is Same Chip As A12X, With Extra GPU Core Enabled

The 2020 iPad Pro is powered by an A12Z processor, which is the same processor as the 2018 iPad Pro’s A12X processor, but with an extra GPU core enabled, it has been confirmed by TechInsights.

Soon following the release of the 2020 iPad Pro arose speculation that the new 2020 iPad Pro was using the same A12-based chip that its predecessor had as early benchmarks showed little in the way of performance improvements.

A March report indicated the new iPad Pro’s A-series chip was simply a rebranded A12X with an extra GPU core enabled. Monday’s tweet confirms that.

Apple’s A12Z has an extra GPU core activated. The A12Z is an 8-core GPU, compared to the A12X 7-core GPU.

TechInsights conducted a floorplan analysis to determine the differences between the A12X and the A12Z, and the GPUs are the same. A full report should soon be available on the TechInsights website for those with a subscription.
