Apple CEO Tim Cook on Sunday shared a video update on the company’s efforts to battle the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Cook announced Apple has now sourced over 20 million masks that it is in the process of working with governments to donate to healthcare professionals around the world. Apple is striving to ensure the masks are going to where the need is greatest.
Apple is dedicated to supporting the worldwide response to COVID-19. We’ve now sourced over 20M masks through our supply chain. Our design, engineering, operations, and packaging teams are also working with suppliers to design, produce and ship face shields for medical workers.
Cook says Apple’s design, engineering, operations, and packaging teams are working with suppliers to design, produce, and ship face shields for medical workers. The Cupertino firm plans to donate one million face shields by the end of this week, and will then donate one million per week.
Cook said the adjustable face shields take under two minutes to assemble. The shields can be packed flat, allowing 100 to fit in a single box. While shipments will initially be sent to medical facilities in the United States, Apple has plans to expand the distribution to a global level at a later date.
Apple delivered its first batch of face shields to Kaiser medical facilities in the Santa Clara Vally area, and Cook said initial feedback was “very positive.”
