Apple Celebrates Its 44th Birthday Today – It Was Founded on April 1, 1976

Happy 44th Birthday Apple! (Apple was founded on April Fools Day, April 1, 1976.)

Steve Jobs and Steve (Woz) Wozniak and Ronald Wayne founded what would become one of the most successful companies in history. The company was originally founded to sell the Apple I personal computer kit to the Homebrew Computer Club.

The company’s first logo incorporated Sir Isaac Newton, due to the “Apple” connection. It was hand-drawn by Ronald Wayne and contains a quotation from William Wordsworth “Newton…A Mind Forever Voyaging Through Strange Seas of Thought…Alone.”

While Ronald Wayne soon left the company (receiving a whopping $800 for his trouble), Jobs and Wozniak persevered to release the Apple I, which revolutionized the then-fledgling home computer industry.

Since then, the company has continued to revolutionize the industry, with the Mac, the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and so many other products.

For an inside look at the founding of Apple, be sure to read Woz’s article Homebrew and How the Apple Came to Be.

Apple has changed quite a bit over these 44 years, hanging on through feast and famine, even bouncing back from near bankruptcy to achieving the feat of being one of the largest companies in the world today.

Sure, Apple (along with the rest of the world), is struggling a bit, but we’re all going to get through this and come out stronger on the other side!

Happy 44th birthday Apple! We should all look so good in our mid-forties!
