Apple’s ‘Find My’ App Helps Melbourne Police Track Bad Guys During Deadly Car Chase

A stolen iPad and Apple’s “Find My” app helped Melbourne, Australia track two bad guys during a deadly car chase following a home invasion.

In a recent home invasion robbery, 29-year-old Vaatoa Chang and 36-year-old Jonas Montealegre reportedly made off with two vehicles and an iPad, the latter of which had Apple’s “Find My” device tracking feature enabled.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the iPad’s owner tracked his car to a local hotel, where the two bad guys switched vehicles. Police helicopters tracked the duo via the stolen iPad’s “Find My” location information during a two-hour pursuit through Melbourne.

Police were able to use a spike strip to blow out the vehicle’s tires, after which the duo attempted to carjack two more vehicles. A second but shortlived pursuit was authorized.

The Herald reports the disabled Toyota Kluger that the men stole from the hotel sped off and careened into a semi-truck at about 62 mph. Both suspects were killed in the crash, which caused the semi to tip over onto another car. Luckily, the drivers of the truck and other vehicles involved in the crash received only minor injuries.

The chain of events took place on February 4, but police only recently released all of the details about the chase.
