The latest macOS Catalina 10.15.3 beta, released on Monday, contains references to a new high-performance “Pro Mode,” which can be toggled on and off by the user.
As reported by 9to5Mac, some strings mention that “Apps may run faster, but battery life may decrease and fan noise may increase” and “Fan speed limit overridden” when the Pro Mode is activated.
The strings are directly related to the macOS power management system, and it appears that it will be possible to temporarily improve the machine’s performance by overriding some energy-saving restrictions on the Mac. The new Pro Mode will allow internal fans to run at a higher speed, likely to avoid thermal throttling issues. Pro Model will automatically disable itself by the next day. Pro Mode availability could be restricted to MacBook Pro models that boast the new thermal design that debuted with the new 16-inch MacBook Pro. A new 13-inch MacBook Pro model registered by Apple on Tuesday may include the new thermal design, along with the new scissor keyboard found on the 16-inch model.
Pro Mode may be something Apple is considering, and it may never come to fruition. However, if it does make a public appearance it will offer a way to squeeze just a little bit more performance from some MacBook Pro models.
