Barclays: iPhone 12 to Boast Improved Face ID, Apple May Drop Lightning Connector in 2021 Models

Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis, Thomas O’Malley, and Baylie Harri. say iPhone 12 models will feature a “refreshed” front-facing TrueDepth system, and 2021 could finally see the removal of the Lightning connector from at least one iPhone model.

Barclays says a “refreshed” front-facing TrueDepth system that benefits Apple supplier Lite-On Semiconductor could make an appearance on the 2020 iPhones, suggesting Face ID on the devices could see some improvement.

In a research note (via MacRumors), the Barclays analysts added that the rear-facing camera system on iPhone 12 Pro models will feature 3D sensing based on a time-of-flight solution, as has already been widely rumored. They also expect to see a RAM bump again, with iPhone 12 Pro models sporting 6GB of RAM, up from the 4GB in iPhone 11 Pro models.

The analysts also say Apple may remove the Lightning connection from at least one 2021 iPhone model. Their “prediction” jibes with one offered by well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last month.
