Yep, there was an asterisk up there, so there are terms, conditions, and various other “gotchas,” as follows:

Apple’s email also reminds you that there ate other ways to use Apple Pay to “ring in the new year,” such as buying movie tickets on Fandango, grabbing hotel deals on HotelTonight, and renting a car through Turo.
Apple also reminds you that it’s your last chance to receive 6 percent back on Apple Store and apple.com purchases when paying with Apple Card through December 31.
