Ming-Chi Kuo: Apple Watch Series 6 to Feature Improved Water Resistance & Improved Performance

The Apple Watch Series 5 has been around for a couple of months, so it’s surely time for rumors about the Apple Watch Series 6, right?

In a research note with investor firm TF International Securities, via MacRumors, well-respected Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the 2020 Apple Watch lineup will feature improved performance, better water resistance and improved wireless radios which should offer faster Wi-Fi and cellular speeds.

Kuo says these improvements will be made possible by Apple’s switch to liquid crystal polymer or LCP material for the flexible circuit boards in next year’s Apple Watch models. The Apple Watch Series 5 models and earlier use a material known as polyimide or PI. Kuo says Dongshan Precision, Avary Holding, and Flexium Interconnect will be the primary LCP suppliers.

The current Series 5 Watch features an S5 chip, which performs similar to the Apple Watch Series 4’s S4 chip, but features a built-in compass and an always-on display driver. It sounds as if improved performance will be the big change for the upcoming “S6” chip.

As for water resistance, since the Apple Watch Series 2, the watch has already been ready for swimming or showering, with an ability to be submerged up to 50 meters. Increased water resistance could make the Series 6 suitable for such water-related activities as scuba diving or water skiing.

As is normal for reports like this, always take them with a grain of your favorite salt-free seasoning. We won’t find out what’s actually in store for the Apple Watch Series 6 until next September.
