Apple last week released their new Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max handsets. And of course, repair site iFixit just had to see what it was made of.
iFixit and Creative Electron today published an X-ray teardown of the new battery cases to see what makes them tick and see how the case’s camera button feature works.
This year’s cases have a new camera button on the right side that opens the Camera app when pressed. Once the Camera app opens, another press of the button takes a photos, while holding it down takes a QuickTake video.
iFixit’s x-rays reveal that the camera button works through a tiny circuit board in the case, that has a thin, flexible circuit running out to connect to the photo button. The circuit board connects the camera button to the iPhone through the Lightning port “chin” at the bottom of the case.
The button is slightly recessed, to help prevent accidentally activating the Camera feature, in addition to the need to hold it down for a bit to start the Camera app.
Other than the camera button reveal, nothing earthshaking was exposed, but the x-ray does show the inductive charging coil, as well as the 10.9v battery and other internal circuitry.
