Since the new iPhones have been out for a month or so, it’s okay to publish rumors about the 2020 iPhone, right? Right? Meh! We’re doing it anyway. Apple is reportedly testing several methods of creating a smaller Face ID notch for their 2020 model, and the device might feature a wider antenna to support 5G.
Generally reliable industry source Benjamin Geskin has published a series of reports saying Apple is currently testing multiple prototypes of its iPhone 2020 lineup, as it tests new Face ID options. Mainly, Apple is said to working on reducing the size of the screen notch, either in height or width.
“Apple is testing a few Face ID prototypes with new optics,” Geskin writes, “some are smaller in width, some are narrower to fit the top bezel.”

He also claims Apple is making changes to the handset’s antennas, to provide support for 5G.
“2020 iPhone prototypes include wider antenna lines (>1mm) for 5G,” he continues. “Instead of plastic lines it will use a new material (glass, ceramic or sapphire).”

Geskin also reports Apple is looking at abandoning the Lightning port for charging and data transfer. He says that they won’t be switching to USB-C as might be expected, but instead is aiming to solely use wireless charging. Geskin says it’s a “long-term plan,” so this will likely happen in a future iPhone, not the 2020 model.

As is usual, grab that grain of salt-free substitute to help digest this report, as nothing is set in stone until Apple announces the 2020 iPhones in fall 2020.
