Apple will be donating money to “help preserve and restore” the Amazon rainforest across Latin America, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced Monday on Twitter.
The announcement comes in the wake of the horrible fires raging in Brazil for the last several weeks, which is causing terrible damage to the rainforest.
It’s devastating to see the fires and destruction ravaging the Amazon rainforest, one of the world’s most important ecosystems. Apple will be donating to help preserve its biodiversity and restore the Amazon’s indispensable forest across Latin America.

Although Cook did not specify the amount Apple would be donating, for similar tragedies in the past, Apple has provided $1 million or more for fire relief purposes.
While fires in the area are a regular occurrence during July and August, the Amazon rainforest fires in 2019 have been particularly severe, with the number up 85% compared to last year. As of Sunday night, over 80,000 fires were burning in Brazil, impacting the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Para, Mato Grosso and Rondônia. The country declared a state of emergency earlier this month.
