IHS Markit Analyst: Apple is Working on a Foldable iPad With 5G Capabilities

Apple is rumored to be developing a foldable iPad, with 5G capabilities. The rumor comes courtesy of IHS Markit, via Economic Daily News.

While the start of 2019 saw several foldables announced by various smart device makers, actual products have yet to hit store shelves, after reviewers found that the Samsung Galaxy Fold (seen above) suffered from durability issues and the South Korean electronics firm delayed the device’s launch to the public.

As is normal for rumors such as this one, IHS Markit didn’t offer details on how or where the new iPad would bend. No information is available as to whether it would be more of a laptop-like experience, or more like the Samsung and Huawei prototypes that have been shown.

The product is said to feature MacBook-sized screens, and support 5G cellular radios for a fast internet browsing experience, says the IHS Markit analyst.

As is usual for reports like these, take them with a healthy dose of your favorite salt-free seasoning. Apple’s struggles to come up with a 5G modem for their device lineup is well documented, and the Cupertino firm isn’t expected to release 5G-capable devices until fall 2020. This makes it likely that any foldable iPad with 5G capabilities wouldn’t see the light-of-day until at least 2021.
