Apple’s previously defunct Expansion Slot Utility app has made a return in the beta of macOS Catalina, just ahead of the launch of the new Mac Pro.
The Expansion Slot Utility app allows users to manage and configure PCI cards. The return of the app is clearly meant to allow configuration of PCI expansion cards for the total of eight PCIe expansion slots in the new Mac Pro.
The app was discontinued many years back, in the wake of the debuit of the 2008 Mac Pro. The new 2.0 version is back for the new Mac Pro.
Evidence of the return of the utility is hidden in the second macOS Catalina beta, currently being tested by developers and public beta testers. Developer Steve Moser, and developer / journalist Guilherme Rambo both posted evidence of the return of the Expansion Slot Utility app via Twitter.
