iOS 13 Will Allow Downloading of Large Apps Over a Cellular Connection

Apple unveiled iOS 13 during their WWDC 2019 keynote address on Monday, and one of the feature mentions was a new option to allow the downloading of “large apps” over cellular.

The new mobile operating system will allow iPhone owners to download apps and games of any size over their cellular connection. This means users will no longer have to wait until they have access to a Wi-Fi connection to download apps or games larger than the current 200MB limit.

Apple last week announced it was upping the over-the-air download limit for the App Store from 150MB to 200MB. When we reported on the move, we commented that it would be better if unlimited data users were given an option to go ahead and download an app over the 200MB limit if they so desired. iOS 13 will offer that option.

In the iOS 13 settings, a new “App Downloads” option allows users to always allow downloads of any size, ask if the downloads are over 200MB, or always ask first before downloading an app over cellular.

The App Store file download was originally put in place back in the days of limited cellular data plans, and was intended to prevent users from accidentally downloading a large app over their cellular connection and quickly using up their data allowance. However, today’s “unlimited” plans make the limit an unnecessary restriction for many users.
