Google on Wednesday confirmed that its upcoming Pixel 4 smartphones will feature a square-shaped rear camera bump, which is similar to the backside camera bump we expect to see on the 2019 iPhone.
Google’s tweet confirmed a photo of a mockup from a Pixel 4 case maker that had leaked earlier this week. Google’s tweet showed off the new design.
The Pixel 4’s rear camera setup looks to include two lenses, a mic, a flash, and a “spectral sensor” at the top that handles light flicker when recording LCD screens.
Apple is widely believed to also be using a square-shaped camera bump on the backside of its 2019 iPhones. “Leaked” case designs all feature a cutout for a square camera array.
The square camera bump is expected to house a triple-lens camera array on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Mac successors, while the next generation iPhone XR will feature a dual-shooter setup.
Most leaks indicate the three lens setup will be arranged in a triangle shape, with two lenses aligned to the left, with the third set in-between the two lenses, aligned to the right. A flash will be above that.
The Google lens setup has the two lenses for its camera arranged horizontally with a flash at the bottom.
Apple’s new iPhones and the Google Pixel 4 are both expected to debut in the fall.
