Apple Pay Coming to Select New York City MTA Subway Stations on May 31

Apple Pay is coming to New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Friday, May 31. Commuters will be able to use Apple Pay with the new tap-to-pay fare system on buses in Staten Island and 4, 5, and 6 subway lines between Grand Central Station in Manhattan and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

TechCrunch says the kiosks are already active. However, your iPhone 6s and SE or later will need to be running iOS 12.3 and your Apple Watch will need to have watchOS 5.2.1 installed. A debit or credit card needs to be associated with Express Transit in Apple Wallet, using Face ID or Touch ID.

To use the system, hold the phone or watch up to the display and you’ll hear a beep and see a big “Go” on the screen, and a “Done” message on your device. Expect a learning curve with the new system. Plus, the novelty of paying this way could lead to a bit of a back up at the turnstiles.

The system will be limited to single-ride passes initially, so users of daily, weekly, or monthly passes won’t be able to use Apple Pay yet. Those additional fare options will be introduced in late 2020, when the MTA expects to have Apple Pay available on all subway lines and buses.
