WWDC 2019: iOS 13 Will Allow Developers to Integrate Siri Into Their Apps

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2019 begins June 3rd, and the Cupertino firm is expected to debut iOS 13 during the conference’s keynote address.

9to5Mac‘s Guilherme Rambo (with help from developer Steve Troughton-Smith) has shared more details about what to expect from Apple’s latest and greatest mobile operating system.

Siri

Apple will offer new Siri intents that will allow developers to integrate the virtual personal assistant into their apps, providing features related to “media playback, search, voice calling, event ticketing, message attachment, train trip, flight, airport gate and seat information.”

Marzipan

Developers that are porting their iOS apps to macOS will have access to a new set of APIs that will allow their UIKit apps to integrate with Mac-only features, including the Touch Bar and Menu Bar. UIKit apps on the Mac will be able to open multiple windows.

Split View apps ported over from iOS will be able to be resized by dragging the divider and its position can be rest by double-clicking the divider, just like native Mac apps.

Augmented Reality, NFC, Taptic Engine, More

Augmented Reality on iOS 13 will be significantly improved, with a new Swift-only framework for AR, as well as a companion app that will allow developers to create AR experiences visually. ARKit will also gain the ability to detect human poses. The new OS will also gain support for controllers with touch pads and stereo AR headsets.

Developers will gain more control over Taptic Feedback, thanks to a new framework.

NFC will be improved, allowing developers to read any ISO7816, FeliCa or MiFare tags. Currently only NDEF formatted tags can be read by third-party apps.

A new version of CoreML will allow developers to update their machine learning models on- the device. Currently, models are required to be pre-trained and remain static after deployment. ML models will be able to change their behavior as the ML models learn from a user’s actions.

Apple will debut iOS 13, macOS 10.15, watchOS 6, and tvOS 13 on June 3rd, during the WWDC 19 keynote address. Following the keynote, developers should have access to the initial betas of all of the new operating systems. The new operating systems will hit the public’s devices later in the year, likely in September.
