Apple will now provide free Mac data migration services when customers purchase a new Mac or have their Mac replaced for repair reasons. Previously, there was a $99 fee for data migration.
TidBITS first found out about the new policy from one of their readers and received confirmation of the change from an Apple Store Operations Specialist.
Once upon a time, Mac data migration was an included feature of Apple’s One to One program, which ended in 2015. For a $99 fee payable with the purchase of a new Mac, One to One members could take advantage of data migration, as well as one year’s worth of instruction and help. When the One to One program ended, Apple continued offering data migration for the $99 fee.
Apple store employees will now be able to help new Mac buyers move information from their old Mac to their new machine. Do-it-yourself data migration is still available by using the built-in Migration Assistant, available when setting up a new Mac.
