Apple Cuts iPhone XR Prices by 25% in India

Apple is reported to have cut iPhone XR prices in India by around 25%. The price cut comes on the heels of a similar move by the Cupertino firm in China.

Reuters reports their sources tell them that the price of an iPhone XR with 64GB storage has seen its price reduced by at least 17,900 rupees ($259). The price includes a price cut and a credit card cash back campaign.

“Apple is going to change their game,” one of the sources told Reuters, adding that the company may adjust the price of other device according to their demand.

Apple’s India website still shows the price of the 64 GB iPhone XR as 76,900 rupees, but is on sale for less than 59,000 rupees at stores, the sources said.

Reuters’ sources say the pricing for the other two storage models have also been lowered, but that the pricing is a “short-term promotional offer.”

While India is an attractive market for Apple (just one in four Indians own a smartphone), more than 75% of the smartphones in use in India cost less than $250. The iPhone has proven to be a tough sell in the price-sensitive market.

Research firm Canalys says the number of iPhones shipped in India fell 40% in 2018 compared with 2017. Apple’s India market share dropped to 1% down from around 2%.

This has been a week of price drops for Apple, as it today dropped the price of the HomePod smart speaker to $299 (down from $349), and also dropped the price of several products in China.
