iFixit Teardown of 2nd-Generation AirPods Shows Improved Build Quality

Apple’s 2nd-generation AirPods are hitting ears everywhere, and as is usual following the release of a new Apple product, iFixit has performed the usual teardown voodoo that they do so well on the earbuds.

While the exterior of the new wireless earbuds remains unchanged, there are two improvements to the earbuds’ build quality.

iFixit says the dimensions of the new buds are identical to the 1st-generation AirPods, although the charging case weighs 2.3g more (about the weight of a U.S. penny) to accommodate the wireless charging coil and circuitry. The batteries in the new AirPods and the case are the same as the previous generation.

As is usual for an Apple product, taking the AirPods apart wasn’t a picnic. In addition to all of the usual tools used by Fixit, disassembly also required a vise, razor blade, heatgun, isopropyl alcohol to soften the adhesive, an ultrasonic knife, and a dental pick. (You know, the stuff most people have laying around the house.)

iFixit found two major interior differences in addition to the new charging circuitry and a relocated status light.

  1. A new hinge – “This machined metal hinge looks sturdier compared to the last generation’s, and it definitely has the adhesive to match.”
  2. Better waterproofing – “We immediately notice that this generation’s logic board is more … goopier … than the board that emerged from the wreckage of the first AirPod fiasco—probably to help with water resistance.”

iFixit gave the new 2nd-generation AirPods the same 0/10 rating for repairability, as the earbuds were impossible to put back together after the teardown.
