Coding changes in the latest beta of iOS 12.3 found by 9to5Mac‘s Guilherme Rambo indicate Apple’s much-delayed AirPower charging mat could hit shelves in the near future.
Yesterday, Apple released the sixth developer beta of iOS 12.2. Looking into what is in the update, we noticed it brings significant changes to the component responsible for wireless charging, including the code responsible for identifying that two devices are charging on the same mat.
AirPower can charge up to three devices at once, using the device with the largest screen to display the charging status for all devices on the mat. It shows 3D animations of the devices on screen when they start charging, which is in part what this system component is for.
The AirPower charging mat was first announced in 2017 alongside the iPhone X, but has faced production delays which have caused significant delays in the release date.
While Apple has had a busy week so far, with new iPad and iMacs being announced on Monday and Tuesday respectively, as well as a possible new iPod touch announcement set for Wednesday, no indication have risen that the AirPower or the much-rumored new AirPods might be released this week. However, they do appear to be inching ever closer to release. Stay tuned.
