Roku Rumored to be in Talks With Apple About Adding AirPlay 2 Support

Roku is said to be in talks with Apple about adding AirPlay 2 support to its devices. The ever-popular “source familiar with the matter” says the two firms are working out the details surrounding the possible partnership. The plans are not final and could change.

MacRumors:

We’re told that AirPlay 2 support is likely to arrive in the form of a Roku OS software update for Roku media players, which can be used with virtually any smart TV. The update would likely extend to smart TVs with Roku OS preinstalled, including select models from Sharp, TCL, Insignia, Hisense, Sanyo, and RCA.

It isn’t clear as to which Roku players and televisions would offer AirPlay 2 support, or if it would be limited to new devices or would be available to older devices via a software update. The MacRumors report indicates the partnership could extend to Apple Music, which would see an app to access the streaming music service, right alongside existing apps for other music services, including Spotify, Amazon Music, and others.

AirPlay 2 support would allow Roku users to stream video, audio, photos, and other content directly from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to their smart TVs.

Last month, it was announced that select smart TVs from Samsung, Vizio, LG, and Sony would offer AirPlay 2 support. Samsung’s latest sets will also offer and iTunes app for streaming movies and television episodes.
