Apple Honors Korean Police for Cracking Down on Sale of Counterfeit Apple Accessories

Apple will honor Korean police for seizing counterfeit accessories worth 1 billion won ($892,000 US) by presenting a plaque to the officers of a local police unit.

The Korea Herald (Via MacRumors):

As a token of thanks, Donald Shruhan, senior regional director for Apple’s Asia-Pacific operations, will visit the Bucheon Sosa Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, on Friday to deliver a plaque of appreciation to investigators who arrested local distributors of fake Apple charging cables and earphones.

The fake products are said to have originated in China, although Korean authorities still haven’t figured out how they made it into the country. The distributors are said to be under investigation on suspicion of fraud and trademark violations, said the Herald’s sources.

There is a long history of Apple being afflicted by counterfeit products from China. Authorities in the past have broken up counterfeit iPhone rings and have shut down fake Apple Stores in China over the years.

Some counterfeiters are bolder than others, as MacRumors mentions a Chinese company that was caught selling fake versions of the then yet-to-be-released Apple Watch at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show in 2015.
