Apple Responds to HomePod ‘White Ring’ Issue

Apple has published a support article in response to issues customers are experiencing with their new HomePod speaker leaving white rings on certain wood surfaces.

The response comes as part of an update to a support article that explains how to clean and care for the smart speaker. The Cupertino firm says the issue should be expected and is not a defect.

It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-damping silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces. The marks can be caused by oils diffusing between the silicone base and the table surface, and will often go away after several days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface. If not, wiping the surface gently with a soft damp or dry cloth may remove the marks. If marks persist, clean the surface with the furniture manufacturer’s recommended cleaning process. If you’re concerned about this, we recommend placing your HomePod on a different surface.

While it appears Apple may have expected this issue, its safe to say their customers did not. Apple has comment on speculation that the company might change the manufacturing process to “fix” the issue.
