A growing number of users are reporting the display of their new iPhone X handsets becomes unresponsive in cold weather. Users who have experienced the issue says their iPhones refuse to recognize input when exposed to cold weather outside.
Apple says there is a software bug behind the issue, and promises a fix in an upcoming update. In a statement to The Loop, Apple said:
“We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment. After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”
Reddit users report their device becomes unresponsive when they walk outside with the device:
I’ve noticed that my iPhone X screen becomes very unresponsive as soon as I step outside. It literally takes 2 seconds from going inside to the cold outdoors and my screen stops being very responsive. I try swiping on websites and it doesn’t register my finger. It’s very noticeable. Is anyone else having this problem?
While Apple says its iOS devices operate best in a temperature range of 0º to 35º C (32º to 95º F), some users report they’ve experienced the issue outside that range. Reddit user darus214 says his happened when it was 45 to 50ºF outside.

Not all iPhone X owners are reporting the issue, and most that are affected say the issue clears up after a few minutes.
Reddit user malehumangeek says he found a workaround:
I came to the same conclusion this morning- unresponsive keyboard, locked/unlocked and it worked fine. Must mean it’s a software issue caused by a hardware response to cold?
There is no word on when a fix might be upcoming. Apple released iOS 11.1.1 on Thursday, which fixed an autocorrect bug that caused “i” to correct to “A[?]” on some devices. A fix could come in iOS 11.2, which is currently in beta testing. Apple could also release a minor update before then, perhaps in an iOS 11.1.2 update. We’ll keep you posted.
