A listing for an as yet unannounced “Files” app was spotted in the App Store for a fleeting period of time late Sunday, just ahead of today’s expected debut of iOS 11 at the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote.
The listing suggests that Apple may be planning to offer iOS users direct file management access in iOS 11. iOS power users have long desired such a feature. The listing was spotted by developer Steven Troughton-Smith late Sunday, it has since been removed.
Apple did not include any information about the app in the listing, merely including a blue folder icon, such as those familiar to macOS users. No screenshots or descriptive text were available, other than a listed requirement for iOS 11 and 64-bit support.
Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, iOS users have longed for direct access to the iOS file structure. However, Apple has restricted such access to apps and services, in an effort to keep iOS as simple as possible for the average user.
Apple kicks off their WWDC 2017 conference at 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern time today, with a keynote where new versions of iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS are expected to make their debut. The company is also expected to debut new hardware, including new MacBooks, iPads, and possibly a Siri smart speaker. Stay tuned.
