Sales of Apple’s Mac lineup saw a 4.5% increase in shipments in the first quarter of 2017, flying in the face of a slumping overall PC market.
Gartner reports Apple shipped 4.2 million Mac units in the three month period ended in March, good for fifth place among computer manufacturers. That is up 4.5% from the same time last year.
Lenovo was the top dog in the quarter, with 12.4 million units shipped, up 1.2% from last year. Lenovo’s numbers were good for a 19.9% share of the global PC market. HP took second place with 19.5% of the market, shipping 12 million PCs worldwide. Those numbers were up 6.5% from last year.
Dell and Asus rounded out the top five, taking third and fourth place, respectively. Dell pushed estimated 9.4 million units out the door, up 3.4% from 2016. Meanwhile, Asus was the only PC manufacturer in the top five to see a slip in sales, shipping 4.6 million units, good for a 7.3% marketshare, down 14% from a year ago.
Gartner says overall worldwide PC shipments totaled 62.2 million units, a 2.4% decline compared to the first quarter of 2016.
IDC also released their preliminary PC shipping numbers for the first quarter on Tuesday, and as usual, they contradicted Gartner’s numbers. (This is due to Gartner’s including ultraportables like the Microsoft Surface in its estimates, but not counting tablets like Apple’s iPad.)
IDC says Apple took fourth place in Q1 2017, with 4.2 million units shipped for a 7% global marketshare. That was a 4.1% increase over a year ago.
HP took first in IDC’s rankings, with 13 million shipments for a 21.8% share, up 13.1 % on the year. Lenovo was nipping at HP’s heels, with a 20.4% share of the market with 12.3 million units shipped, up 1.7% over the same time last year..
Dell’s 9.6 million units shipped was good for a third place finish, and a 15.9% share of the pie. Acer ranked fifth, behind Apple, with 4.1 million units shipped, for 6.8% of the market.
