Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review has changed its mind on the screen size of Apple’s upcoming “iPhone 8” handset, as a new report from the publication indicates Apple’s new top of the line device will boast a 5.8-inch screen.
The website had previously claimed the Cupertino firm would release 3 iPhone models in the fall, with a 5-inch model joining the 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch models the company already offers.
From the weekend Nikkei report:
The upcoming iPhone, to be launched this fall, will come in three configurations — two with liquid crystal displays and one with a 5.8-inch organic light-emitting diode display.
5.8 inches appears to be the agreed upon size in all the latest iPhone rumors and predictions. Well connected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities previously indicated the 10th anniversary iPhone would boast a 5.8-inch OLED display. However, he said the primary viewing area will only be 5.15-inches, leaving the rest of the display space to be used by a row of virtual buttons. Kuo indicated the device’s physical dimensions would likely be similar to a 4.7-inch iPhone.
Reports also indicate the Home button will be removed from the device with possibly iris or facial recognition replacing the Touch ID sensor currently found in the physical home button on the handsets.
As always, take these reports with your favorite brand of low-salt or salt-free seasoning. Nothing is set in stone until Apple takes the stage this fall to debut the new “iPhone 8.” We’ll keep you posted.
