Moves in the four-way wireless carrier chess game continued on Friday, as AT&T debuted a new GoPhone prepaid plan with unlimited talk, text, and data. In related news, T-Mobile upped their throttling limit to 30GB.
AT&T announced on Friday it was debuting a new GoPhone prepaid plan that offers unlimited everything for $65 per month, or $6 per month with AutoPay enabled. Data on the plan is limited to a maximum speed of 3Mbps. Mobile Hotspot fans will want to steer clear of the plan, as it does not include tethering.
Streaming video on the plan is limited to standard definition, (480p), at a maximum rate of 1.5Mbps. The death star carrier will temporarily slow your data speed down “during periods of network congestion” if you go over 22GB of data usage during any billing cycle.
The new AT&T GoPhone Unlimited plan also allows users to use their data, make calls and send texts in and between the U.S., Mexico and Canada without incurring any additional charges.
A lower-priced GoPhone plan is available for $5 per month or $40 per month with AutoPay, which offers unlimited talk, text, and up to 6GB of data at a maximum data speed of 3 Mbps. Users who go over the 6GB limit will see their data speeds slowed to a maximum speed of 128kbps for the rest of their prepaid period. Tethering is not included in this plan.
Meanwhile, T-Mobile quietly upped their data slowdown threshold to 30GB, up form a previous amount of 28GB. The change was spotted by TmoNews.
What the change means is that if you go over 30GB of data usage in any one billing cycle, your data usage will be slowed when needed during times of network congestion for the rest of your billing cycle.
