LG Redesigning UltraFine 5K Display to Address Wi-Fi Router Interference Issue

LG has confirmed it is redesigning its 27-inch UltraFine 5K Display to address an issue that saw the display flicker, disconnect, or freeze the attached Mac when placed within two meters of a router.

LG told Recode that it’s planning to redesign the displays.

“LG apologizes for this inconvenience and is committed to delivering the best quality products possible so all LG UltraFine 27-inch 5K displays manufactured after February 2017 will be fitted with enhanced shielding,” says an LG spokesperson.

Earlier this week, an LG support person confirmed that a number of users had reported the issue and that it seemed to only affect the company’s new 5K monitors that it markets in partnership with Apple.

Recode reports models already purchased or on store shelves can be “retrofitted” with the enhanced shielding, allowing it to be used near a router. The company will reportedly carry out repairs on a case-by-case basis. Affected users are encouraged to contact their nearest LG customer service center for service.

Apple and LG debuted the 5K display, and its smaller 4K sibling, at Apple’s MacBook Pro event back in October. The displays are designed to work well with the MacBook Pro models that were unveiled during that same event. The UltraFine displays are intended to replace Apple’s own Thunderbolt Display. The 5K Display is currently available on the Apple online store at the sale price of $974 until March 31, 2017, when the price will return to $1,299.95.
