While some observers believed Samsung would drop the Samsung Galaxy Note moniker, due to the Galaxy Note 7 spontaneous combustion fiasco, it appears the South Korean electronics firm believes there is enough goodwill attached to the name that it will release the Galaxy Note 8 sometime in the second-half of 2017.
An official from the electronics industry said on January 2, “The Galaxy Note 7 was very popular before user reports began circulating about devices that exploded or caught on fire while charging. As the phablet market, which was developed by Samsung Electronics, has been growing, the company will release the Note series this year again.” The phablet a class of mobile computing devices designed to combine or straddle the size format of smartphones and tablets.
Samsung apparently feels secure in the belief that the Note 8 won’t repeat the performance of the Note 7, which had a tendency in some cases to explode into flames. The electronics maker conducted an investigation into the fiasco, and will release the results of that inquiry later this month.
The Business Korea report also mentions possible specs for the new device, which it says will feature a 4K resolution screen, offering an improved virtual reality experience, when used with the company’s new Gear VR wearable. Samsung virtual assistant “Bixby” will also make an appearance on the device.
It remains to be seen if Samsung customers will forgive the company for the Note 7’s fiery shortcomings and embrace the Galaxy Note 8 when it debuts. Hopefully Samsung has learned something from its investigation into the Note 7’s issues, and will take steps to ensure the quality of the handset, as well as the all-important safety of its customers.
