Apple Officially Named as a ‘Partnership on AI’ Founding Member

Apple has officially been named as a founding member of the Partnership on AI. Tom Gruber, who was a Siri co-founder and currently heads advanced development of the virtual assistant at Apple, will serve on the Partnership’s inaugural Board of Trustees.

Apple has joined the Partnership on AI as a founding member. The company has been involved and collaborating with the Partnership since before it was first announced and is thrilled to formalize its membership alongside Amazon, Facebook, Google/DeepMind, IBM, and Microsoft.

The non-profit Partnership on AI” research consortium was established to “study and formulate best practices on AI technologies, to advance the public’s understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society.”

The foundation also seeks to “advance public understanding and awareness of AI and its potential benefits and potential costs to act as a trusted and expert point of contact as questions/concerns arise from the public and others in the area of AI and to regularly update key constituents on the current state of AI progress.”

In the past, Apple has been secretive about its AI and machine learning projects, but recently loosened up a bit, allowing it researchers to publish papers about their research. Apple’s increased involvement in the artificial intelligence research community should greatly benefit the Cupertino firm, as it strives to attract top AI talent to their projects.
