It figures that Nintendo would find a way to tamp down iOS users’ excitement over the upcoming release of Super Mario Run on iOS devices. Apparently, the game, set to hit devices next week, will require a constant internet connection to be playable. Not exactly an ideal requirement for a mobile game, is it?
Producer Shigeru Miyamoto told Mashable that Super Mario Run will require the constant internet connection, due to worries over software piracy. While the game is free to download, it requires a $9.99 in-app purchase to unlock all of the game’s levels.
For us, we view our software as being a very important asset for us. And also for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we’re able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they’re able to play it in a stable environment.
We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure. This is something that we want to continue to work on as we continue to develop the game.
Just to be clear: When you say “security,” you mean the risk of piracy, right?
That’s correct.
Nintendo’s concerns are due to the fact that its new game is launching in 150 countries, and they don’t control any of the devices the game will run on.
It remains to be seen how this news will be received by gamers, especially those iPad and iPod touch gamers who may not always have access to a network connection, due to the lack of a cellular radio in their devices. iPhone and iPad owners who do have a cellular connection available will still SOL when they’re on a plane trip, or in other situations where neither a wi-fi or cellular connection is available.
There is always the possibility that Nintendo may pull back on the requirement, but for now, player will be forced to deal with the restriction.
Super Mario Run will hit iOS devices on December 15. The game is free to download, but requires a $9.99 USD in-app purchase to unlock all of the game’s content and levels.
