Recording or capturing your iPhone or iPad’s screen on your Mac comes in handy for posting reviews, or even to boast of a high game score on YouTube. There are a number of methods available, some more complicated than others. Today, we’re taking a look at AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder, a $29.95 solution, available for both Mac and Windows machines.
Overview
AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder runs on your Mac, and via AirPlay, mirrors your iOS device’s screen. The easy-to-use app can record video from your mobile device, as well as capturing single screenshots.
To use the app, simply install it, run the app, and then on your iOS device, activate AirPlay, and select “ApowerSoft [Your Computer’s Name]”, as seen below:
Now that the video is being mirrored to your Mac, you can perform various operations, by using the buttons at the top of the iPhone Screen Recorder app’s screen. The operations that can be performed are, (left to right shown below): “Start Recording,” “Take a Screenshot,” “Open folder,” and “Disconnect.” (All pretty self-explanatory, right?)
Recording screen actions and screenshots is quite simple, just a push of the recording button, and the app begins capturing everything seen on your iOS device, including apps, and games, as seen in the video below.
Capturing still screenshots is also simple, again, consisting of a single button push to capture whatever is on the iOS device’s screen, saving it to your Mac’s hard drive.
To view the video and screenshots you’ve captured using the app, simply click the “Open Folder” button to open a Finder window that displays the contents of the capture folder.
Guess which button you click to disconnect from your iOS device?
Verdict
AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder performs well, and is simple to use. The screen captures it creates look great, and the video it captures, while not the highest quality, is smooth and convenient to create. (It should be noted that I run iOS 10.2 beta seven on my iPhone. Plus, my home wi-fi network performance is less than optimal, both factors possibly leading to some of the artifacts seen in the video.)
While there are free options to perform the same functionality as AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder, and plenty of commercial solutions, the app performs decently, and should be considered when looking for such a software solution.
