Is that $1.5 million worth of iPhones in your pocket, or are you just happy to be off for the day? A former senior manager at Foxconn faces 10 years in jail, following the discovery that he allegedly stole and sold 5,700 iPhone, worth around $1.5 million.
AFP is reporting that the Taiwanese man, named only as Tsai, has been indicted over the allegations and faces trial, with a potential 10-year jail sentence if found guilty.
The thefts are said to have taken place at a Foxconn plant in Shenzen in China. Tsai, a senior manager who worked in the testing department, allegedly enlisted eight employees to smuggle out iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s handsets between 2013 and 2014. He then sold the devices. The devices in question are said to have been test units, not intended for sale. They were supposed to be scrapped once testing was complete.
Foxconn first noticed the thefts during an internal audit. Tsai was arrested in 2016. He is currently out on bail. Tsai has been charged with breach of trust and faces up to 10 years in jail if he is found guilty.
Foxconn is a key supplier for Apple, manufacturing iPhones and a number of other products for the Cupertino firm. The company employs around 1.3 million employees.
