The Unicode Consortium on Thursday announced an updated list of 51 new emoji that could be released next year as a part of Unicode 10. The new characters include a Giraffe, a Zebra, “Person with Headscarf,” Breastfeeding, and a T-Rex. (No, not a breastfeeding T-Rex.)
The proposal is from the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee (PDF link)offers a complete representation of the character set likely to come along for the ride when Unicode 10 hits the streets.
Highlighting the new additions are “Breastfeeding” and two dinosaurs —”T-Rex” and “Sauropod” —while other examples include “Person with Headscarf,” “Mage,” “Elf,” “Genie,” “Zombie,” “Brain,” “Pretzel,” “Canned Food” and “Bearded Person.” Foodies were also considered, as food section proposals include “Coconut,” “Broccoli” and “Cut of Meat,” among others.
Faces likely to make the cut include: “Face with Finger Covering Closed Lips,” “Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes and Hand Covering Mouth,” and “Grinning Face with Crazy Eyes,” as well as the sure to be popular selections: “Face with Open Mouth Vomiting” and “Shocked Face with Exploding Head.”
The Unicode Consortium should release a final emoji list alongside Unicode 10, sometime in mid-2017. Apple will likely include the new emoji in iOS and macOS updates sometime after the official emoji characters are released.
