Apple Pay on the web has been available for only a little over a month, and it is already ranking as the fifth most popular payment technology online. What’s amazing is the payments technology is only available to Mac and iOS users via the Safari web browser.
SimilarTech, which tracks over 30 billion web pages each month, shows that Apple’s payments technology is the 5th most popular payment platform used by the top 10,000 websites that it tracks. It also holds that fifth position when the sample is expanded to the top 100,000 websites.
Apple Pay on the web launched in late September, as a part of the iOS 10 and macOS Sierra 10.12 releases. Apple Pay is now available on 0.25% of the sites surveyed. Leader PayPal is available on 2.36% of the surveyed websites. PayPal’s subscribe button ranks in at #2, with an additional 0.98% of sites, and #3 Stripe with 0.35% and #4 Braintree with 0.32% of transactions fill out the top five.
Even though Apple Pay is available on noticeably fewer websites than its competitors, it still outranks Google Wallet, Amazon Payments, and over 50 other online payment technologies. Apple Pay is only available on 1,035 websites in total according to the data, while PayPal is on over a million, with 38,000+ for Stripe, 13,000+ for Google Wallet and 8500+ for Amazon Payments.
