Apple has quietly flipped the switch to activate the long-awaited Single Sign-On feature for the Apple TV and iOS devices. Unfortunately, it’s only currently available on devices running the tvOS 10.1 and iOS 10.2 betas.
Single Sign-On support is also supported by only a few cable services at the moment, with Dish, GVTC Communications, Hotwire, and Sling TV offering support for now.
Apple TV users with a fourth-generation Apple TV running the tvOS 10.1 beta can goto “Settings” -> “Accounts,” where the “TV Provider” selection can be found. Signing into a supported service should allow users access to all of their content associated with that subscription.
iPhone and iPad users can also find the “TV Provider” menu in the Settings app, in the same area where social networks settings are found, as seen below.
Single Sign-On is designed to allow users to access all of their live cable content allowed by their cable company via one login, across multiple apps. It’s an effort on the part of Apple to simplify the Apple TV viewing experience.
At the moment, Single Sign-On is only supported by the four providers listed above, so only a small number of Apple TV owners will be able to enjoy the convenience of the change. However, Apple is working to get more providers on board, so we should begin to see availability widen to other cable and satellite customers.
