T-Mobile users who use their smartphone or tablet as a mobile hotspot will want to hear the latest news from the carrier. T-Mobile is telling customers that during times of network congestion, they’ll be prioritizing on-device data over Mobile Hotspot data.
T-Mobile is now sending emails to customers saying that it’s “putting your on-device experience first” by prioritizing on-device data over Smartphone Mobile HotSpot data. T-Mo does say that this prioritization will only apply when its network is congested.
The Magenta Carrier says customers will still be able to use their phone or tablet as a mobile hotspot when the network is congested. However, they “may notice reduced data speeds when using Smartphone Mobile HotSpot.”

Will I notice any changes?
Probably not! In the vast majority of times and places, you should notice little if any difference between your T-Mobile device and Smartphone Mobile HotSpot data speeds. But in the small number of times or locations where there’s network congestion, you may notice reduced data speeds with using Smartphone Mobile HotSpot.
Why might I notice higher speeds on my T-Mobile device than with my Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (tethering)?
Because we want to provide customers with the best on-device experience, our network is now designed to prioritize T-Mobile on-device data over Smartphone Mobile HotSpot data.
Does this mean I won’t be able to tether?
No. This simply means that in the small number of times or locations where there’s network congestion, customers may notice reduced data speeds when using Smartphone Mobile HotSpot.
So, keep that in mind, if from time-to-time you notice slow speeds when tethering to your smartphone or tablet on the T-Mobile network.
