Google has launched their Cardboard Camera for iOS app, which allows iOS users to capture 360-degree “virtual reality photos,” with just their iPhone or iPad. Photos created using the app are displayed as 3D panoramas, which users can then tap and drag to look around in any direction. The photos also include sound of the goings on that were occurring during the recording.
VR photos taken with Cardboard Camera are three-dimensional panoramas that can transport you right back to the moment. Near things look near and far things look far. You can look around to explore the image in all directions, and even hear sound recorded while you took the photo to hear the moment exactly as it happened. To capture a VR photo, hold your phone vertically, tap record, then turn around as though you’re taking a panorama.
Recording a Cardboard Camera virtual reality photo is similar to taking a panorama photo in the default iOS camera app. Hold the device vertically, tap the record button, and slowly rotate in place to capture a full 360-degree panorama of the surroundings. Sharing of the photos is easy, as they can be directly shared from the app, by generating links and sharing them via email, text message, or via social media.
While the photos can be viewed as a standard panorama by any user, those who have Google Cardboard installed on their app “can relive those moments as if they were there.”
