Apple Working on Fix for Lightning EarPods Issue of Non-Responding Remote Switch

Users of Apple’s new Lightning EarPods, supplied with every new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, occasionally experience an issue where the remote on the accessory becomes unresponsive. Apple tells Business Insider it is working on a fix for the issue.

Occasionally, the remote built-into the EarPods becomes unresponsive. While music will continue to play, there is no way to control the volume, playback of the content, make a phone call, or summon Siri. A quick unplugging and plugging in again of the EarPods temporarily resolves the issue.

Business Insider:

The glitch doesn’t happen every time. It’s seemingly intermittent and random. (I thought I was going crazy until I saw some people with similar issues complaining on Twitter.) If you experience the problem, you can just unplug your EarPods and plug them in again to temporarily fix it.

An Apple spokesperson told me the problem will be fixed in a future software update.

Apple hasn’t given a timeframe for the fix, but it will come in the form of a future software update. At this point in time, we don’t know if the bug also affects third-party Lightning headphones, however, there have been reports of similar bugs when using headphones with a 3.5mm connector, with the supplied Lightning adapter. (Owners of Apple’s own Beats headphones are reportedly experiencing this issue.)

With the release of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple eliminated the 3.5mm headphone jack, in favor of using the Lightning port, formerly used only for charging and syncing of the device.
