A photo of a 334 mAh lithium-ion battery purportedly to be used in the 42mm Apple Watch 2 has been published on Chinese microblogging service Weibo, indicating Apple’s new wearable device will boast an improved battery life.
The battery is allegedly for the 42mm model, which currently has a 246 mAh battery, suggesting the next-generation 42mm model could have a 35.7% larger battery. The photo does not provide any clues about potential battery life improvements coming to the smaller 38mm model, which is currently equipped with a 205 mAh battery.
The photo cannot currently be confirmed to actually be an Apple Watch component. However, earlier this year, well-connected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the Apple Watch 2 will boast improved battery life. A larger battery would improve the battery life of the Watch, which currently is rated for up to 18 hours of mixed usage, with up to 72 hours in Power Reserve Mode, on a full charge.
The Apple Watch 2 is expected to debut later this year, possibly in September, alongside Apple’s new flagship iPhone 7 models. It is rumored to include a faster TSMC-built processor, a built-in GPS and barometer, improved waterproofing, and as a better battery.
