Social photo sharing app Instagram is preparing to launch a new feature to give its users control over the comments shared on each of its posts. The company has long had network-wide rules for what it considers appropriate speech, but the new feature will allow each user decide what is appropriate for their posts.
“Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self expression,” said Instagram’s head of public policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, in a statement to The Post. “We have slowly begun to offer accounts with high volume comment threads the option to moderate their comment experience. As we learn, we look forward to improving the comment experience for our broader community.”
In the next few weeks, more “high-profile” accounts will gain access to the new feature, offering them the ability to use the new filter to adjust comment rules to their own comfort level. The service will also allow users to decide whether to turn off comments on their accounts on a post-by-post basis.
Little guys, like you and me, will have to wait a bit longer to get access to the new feature, as Instagram says only that it will open up the new feature to all of its users “in the coming months.” The company says it wants to use the feedback from its high-profile accounts to fine tune the new feature before rolling it out to all of its millions of users.
