Apple’s notebook shipments for the June quarter of calendar year 2016 totaled an estimated 3.3 million, a nice bump up from the estimated 2.5 million in the March quarter. Market research firm TrendForce attributes the 30.3% quarter-to-quarter increase to the release of new 12-inch MacBook models in April.
Apple updated their MacBook lineup with faster Skylake processors, faster Intel HD graphics, faster PCIe-based flash storage, better battery life, and faster memory.
Apple’s MacBook shipments in the second quarter were up 30.3% versus the first quarter, placing the brand on the fifth spot of the half-year ranking. This shipment surge was generated by the release of an upgraded 12-inch model of the latest MacBook. TrendForce expects MacBook shipments to register sequential growth in the third and fourth quarter because Apple will also be releasing new products for both periods.
Apple took fifth-place in the June quarter’s notebook vendor rankings, unseating Acer for the fifth spot. Lenovo, HP, Dell, and ASUS took spots one through five respectively. Acer, Samsung, and Toshiba filled out the rest of the top eight positions. Apple’s improvements in the second quarter of 2016 wasn’t enough to offset a lousy first quarter, as Mac notebooks grabbed an estimated 7.9% first half 2016 marketshare, a 23.4% year-over-year drop.
