Apple on Wednesday announced it had officially sold the one billionth iPhone. Company CEO Tim Cook announced the milestone at a morning employee meeting in Cupertino.
“iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day,” said Cook. “Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”
Apple has reached the impressive milestone in just over 9 years. The first iPhone debuted on June 29, 2007, and did not allow third-party apps, boasted Edge connectivity, and was limited to the Cingular (Now AT&T network.) Oh how far we have come!
Since its debut, the iPhone has gone through multiple redesigns, and has become the main cash cow for Apple. There have been nine generations of the device, each accompanied by one of the nine major releases of iOS.The device will celebrate its 10th birthday, and word on the street is Apple has some big changes in mind for our favorite handset to mark the occasion. We can’t wait to see the big birthday surprise!
