Apple is offering a hand up to China flood aid efforts, following mass flooding and rainfall in the region since June. USA Today reports the Cupertino firm has donated $1 million to relief efforts.
The China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), a Chinese non-governmental organization, said on Monday that it has received a 7 million yuan (approximately $1 million) donation from Apple.
CFPA says Apple is the first U.S. company that has donated to the organization for relief efforts related to this year’s flooding. The group say it is working closely with Apple to make sure the money is used properly.
Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote on Weibo, the Chinese social networking site similar to Twitter: “Our thoughts are with all those devastated by the flooding along the Yangtze River.”
South China has been hit by heavy rain falls and floods since late June. The disaster has affected over 31 million people in over 500 cities and towns, reports the nation’s Ministry of Civil Affairs. 164 people have lost their lives so far, and 26 are reported missing.
Apple has long supported relief efforts around the world when disaster has struck. It has supported relief efforts in China, Japan, and other countries in the past.
