Unicode 9.0 was approved earlier this month, and as of yesterday, June 21, the 72 new emoji are now official, and can be used in operating systems and messaging apps. The new emoji won’t show up immediately, but will likely rollout to users alongside the fall debut of iOS 10, and whenever Google debuts their next version of Android.
The new batch of emoji include a number of new characters which should prove popular with users, including rolling on the floor laughing, drooling face, and nauseated face, shrug, selfie, and face palm. New animals include gorilla, fox face, deer, shark, and owl. Food hasn’t been left out, and includes avocado, potato, croissant, pancakes, salad, and bacon.
Emojipedia has shared mockups of the new emoji, along with a video, and a complete list. My particular favorites, besides the bacon, are the face palm, the Batman symbol, (yes, you see just a bat, but I see the Batman symbol, and always will), and the tumbler glass of whiskey. (Again, my name, not theirs.)
The emoji pictured above are just mockups, and likely aren’t what the final emoji will look like. Apple and Google designers will actually custom design the emoji based on the Unicode Consortium’s guidelines for each character, and they’ll be designed to match the style of current emoji.
